Assistant Caretaker – 2.5 days per week (18.75 hours per week)
Salary: £13.00 per hour
Dorchester Arts are seeking an Assistant Caretaker to work alongside the team at Dorchester Corn Exchange, supporting the delivery of arts, community and civic events at this exciting and recently refurbished venue.
Although not a requirement of the role, additional hours maybe available for candidates with experience in theatre sound, lighting and technical equipment.
Closing date: Friday Sept 4th at 5pm. Interviews in the w/c Sept 7th.
Job Description
Under the direction of the Senior Town Hall Keeper / Venue Manager to undertake the following duties:
- To be responsible for the security and maintenance of Dorchester Corn Exchange, their fixtures and fittings, and the preparation of rooms for hirers as directed by the Senior Town Hall Keeper / Venue Manager.
- To undertake cleaning and rubbish disposal duties as required, to ensure that facilities required by users of the building (toilets, kitchen areas etc) are stocked and ready for use. The role will include some manual handling and working at height tasks for which appropriate training will be provided.
- To inspect the building with the hirer before and after an event to agree on liability for any damage caused.
- To report any items of equipment that require repair or replacement to the Senior Town Hall Keeper / Venue Manager.
- To act as a Fire Marshall when on duty and ensure that fire safety equipment is in good order and in its proper position. To ensure that evacuation routes are kept free from obstruction. Training to be provided.
- To act as the building’s First Aid contact when on duty. Training to be provided.
- To notify to the Venue Manager of any variation to the agreed requirements on the booking form as soon as possible after the hiring.
- To carry out any other duties as may be reasonably requested such as repairs and decorating of the buildings and the fittings.
- The working pattern is expected to be 2 day shifts with the remaining hours used flexibly to cover building use. Shifts will include late evenings and weekends as required.
- To accept no gratuities from hirers.
- To support Dorchester Arts’ performers in their use of the premises.
- Where required, provide basic technical support to hirers (e.g. microphones, pre-set lights, and projection equipment)
The ideal candidate would have the following abilities and experience:
Essential:
- Demonstrable experience of unlocking & locking buildings, including setting and deactivating alarms and reliability in holding keys etc.
- Ability to Understand Health & Safety and ability to ensure that regulations are followed (COSHH)
- The ability to carry out small repairs, decorating and minor maintenance
- Ability to work up ladders
- Ability to do some lifting and to erect and dismantle simple furniture
- Ability to monitor and do the cleaning in and around the building
- Ability to follow the instructions of the Venue Manager and Senior Town Hall Keeper
- Ability to report any damage or breakages to the relevant people
- Ability to communicate appropriately with people at all levels face to face and over the telephone, in written format and ideally via electronic media.
- Experience of working unsupervised and be able to identify tasks that need doing working proactively
- Ability to be available for evening & weekend work
- Ability to be flexible with working hours
- Ability to adhere the Dorchester Arts Equal Opportunities and other key policies
- Ability to work and get along with Dorchester Arts team and the building users who represent a wide cross section of the local community
Desirable:
- A recognised Health & safety certificate
- A recognised First Aid Certificate
- Knowledge of Risk Assessment

VOLUNTARY ROLES AND TRUSTEES
Could You Be Part of Dorchester Arts’ Reception and Café Team?
Could you spare three hours a week to support Dorchester Arts? Dorchester Arts is on the lookout for friendly and enthusiastic volunteers to join our team in our reception area and bar and café at Dorchester Corn Exchange.
This is an exciting time to get involved, as we expand our offering and welcome even more visitors to what is fast becoming a vibrant centre of creativity and community activity. We’re looking for people with a passion for the arts and great people skills to help us deliver a warm and welcoming experience. Shifts for both positions are from 10am – 1pm and 1pm – 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday. You can sign up for just one regular shift (or more if you are able to) or just to fill in for people when we have gaps.
Reception and Front Desk Volunteer
You’ll be the first face our visitors see, helping with ticket sales, answering phone and in-person queries, providing information about our performances, classes and events, and making everyone who walks through our doors feel welcome.
Café Volunteer
Supporting our Catering Supervisor, you’ll help keep the new café running smoothly by taking orders, preparing and serving food and drinks, keeping the space clean and tidy, and handling payments. Don’t worry as full training will be provided!
While these are unpaid volunteer positions, we’re pleased to offer some great perks, including:

Treasurer
Dorchester Arts is seeking a treasurer to join their Board of Trustees at an exciting time for the organisation. Along with the Chair and Vice-Chair, the treasurer is a senior trustee with primary responsibility for financial governance, the monitoring and reporting of financial matters within the organisation and liaising with key partners such as Dorchester Town Council. The role is voluntary.
