Tue 22 September – Sat 31 October | The Tainted Sublime – Finn Campbell-Notman

Over the last decade Finn has been collecting charcoal from wildfires from Amazonia to the UK.

Using this most archaic of materials Finn has been making artworks that address climate change directly by depicting the very fires from which the charcoal came.

The Tainted Sublime is an ongoing project in which environmental destruction, aesthetic creation and the restoration of those habitats effected takes place through the transformation of charcoal into artwork and by the funding of habitat restoration.

By doing this he hopes to demonstrate that art can be an agent of direct, that its value can derive from its values.

‘It can feel that the problems we face are too large, too complex, and too advanced for anyone to believe they can help to alleviate them, yet I hope I have demonstrated with my work that it is possible however meagre our means’

Technically innovative Finn’s work in The Tainted Sublime is also impressive in scale and scope. He says that his work in this series is a form of contemporary history painting, one that depicts our currently blazing world in new ways but that is rooted in the context of a long tradition. Many of the pieces will be exhibited for the first time in the UK.
