Beethoven – variations for cello and piano on a theme from Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute
Strauss – Piano Quartet in C minor Op. 13
This popular quartet joins us for the first of their regular visits to Dorchester Arts in 2019 with a programme of Beethoven and Strauss. Beethoven’s cello variations are wonderfully inventive – from a lyrical slow movement to a toe-tapping finale. Richard Strauss was to go on to write the great tone poems, such as Don Juan, but this piano quartet, the work of a 19 year-old, shows how the young composer relished writing dramatic and expressive music, full of rich colours.
